Why a Teaching Artist?
Having studied at NYU’s Tisch School of the Arts, Hunter College, and countless conservatory programs, Lauren’s passion for singing, theatre and the theatre arts extends back to her childhood. Inspired by how this work has touched her own life, her goal as a teaching artist is to bring out the utmost in creative expression from each child.
Within the construct of our industrial age education systems, many children are not empowered by their educational communities to be expressive and true to who they are. In response, Lauren’s teachings are based in mindfulness practices, Urban Art Beat’s Critical Revolutionary Hip Hop Pedagogy, Augosto Boal’s Theatre of the Oppressed, and Paulo Freire’s Pedagogy of the Oppressed.
Directly working against the school-to-prison-pipeline, every moment of mindfulness, yoga, and free and welcome self-expression allows each child to recognize the power and freedom found in their own voice. Through empowering the youth with these tools, she is doing her part to secure our future.
